Commuter Employment Project

Together with M.O. Harvey and Associates, Community Futures North Central Development (CFNCD) explored the idea of having workers from outlying communities commute to fill available jobs in Thompson in the trades and service industries.

This study was contracted by Manitoba Aboriginal and Northern Affairs and was completed in July 2009.

Housing

CFNCD was involved in the Thompson Urban Aboriginal Strategy (TUAS) Housing Project.  CFNCD:

  • provided administrative support to the TUAS Building Project Ad-Hoc Committee, and
  • partnered with a Construction Advisor (CJR Consulting) and Boge & Boge Architects to build an eight-unit affordable housing complex at 19 Fox Bay.

Environment

CFNCD has worked on a number of environment projects and continues to act as resource in Northern Manitoba. Past environment projects include:

  • preparing Scrap Metal Best Practices Manual,
  • crating North Central Environment Newsletter,
  • participating in the C4 Project (Fish Offal Composting Feasibility Study, Community Recycling Program, Community Greenhouses, coordinating One Tonne Challenge Program), and
  • assisting in preparing Thompson Recycling Centre Business Plan.

Youth Programming

CFNCD coordinated the Junior Achievement in Northern Manitoba for 5 years.  Thousands of youth throughout the north participated in entreprenurial workshops.  Other youth initiatives have included:

  • setting up the Youth Business Start Program,
  • participating with Make Education Work Program in Thompson, Cross Lake and Norway House,
  • participating with Families and Schools Together (FAST) and winter festival programs in School District of Mystery Lake,
  • conducting Disability Awareness workshops across Northern Manitoba, and
